Not sure what a air source heat pump is? Think of it as your air conditioner that can also work in reverse, bringing in heat from the outdoor air even when it is below freezing.
Why would you want to consider a heat pump? Quite simply, they can be extremely efficient heating your home during the fall and spring...even on those occasional balmy days in January. Because they move heat rather than generate heat, heat pumps can provide up to 4 times the amount of energy they consume. This means that for every $1 it takes to operate the system, you can get up to $4 worth of heat compared to a gas furnace.
When looking at heat pumps you will notice another efficiency listed. In addition to the SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) that all A/C units have, heat pumps also list a HSPF (Heating Seasonal Performance Factor). The higher the SEER and HSPF, the higher the efficiency and lower your monthly utility bill will be.
TRANE offers the XLi family of heat pumps from 15 to 18 SEER with HSPF ratings of up to 9.2.
